X10 is  very easy.  The IR7243 receives an infra-red signal from the Pronto or Marantz, converts it to a radio frequency and superimposes it on the house mains circuit into which it is plugged.  Any X10 device, an appliance module , lamp module or light switch hears this signal, recognises its own identity from the letter and number  you have previously set on its code wheels, and obeys the command from the Pronto, switching or dimming the appliance plugged into it. You can also manually operate the IR7243 without the Pronto.

You can fit X10 devices all over the house and even control outdoor lighting with them as long as the device itself is indoors or in a weather proof shed. The AM12U (13 amp switch) and LM12U (3 amp switch/dimmer) simply plug into a standard mains socket and the appliance is plugged into them. With the LW10U (3 amp switch/dimmer) it's just a matter of replacing your existing light switch in the wall - having first turned off the electrical supply of course - or having an electrician do it for you in less than five minutes.
