Practical Choices
In practice
your choice depends on whether you want a universal remote control with somewhat
limited learning
and programming capability or whether you would prefer the full and almost
unlimited facilities to have it do what you want.
The RU930 and RC3200 fall into the first category, all the others into the
second.
Next comes the choice of monochrome or colour screen. That depends on your budget.
Memory, one or two Megabytes,
makes no difference unless you want to control more than about ten AV devices.
The extra memory simply allows you to store more configurations, it does not
improve any other aspect of performance.
The RU890 and RU940, both guaranteed for 12 months, are identical in every
other way, except price.
You'd be surprised at how much can be packed into the 1 megabyte Pronto, which
has 380kb of free space. Many users have
incorporated complete lists for their 300 and 400 disc CD or DVD jukeboxes, favorite
channel lists with station icons, games, calendars and more.
The majority of users simply won't have any use for more memory.
Philips or Marantz
?
Until last year Marantz were part of the Philips Group, but
now Marantz have broken away to pursue their own strategies which will
include emphasis on home theatre products. Marantz will continue with their
own high end versions of the Pronto, made in the same Belgian factory.
There is a two year Marantz warranty rather than one.
Final
choice
The RU890 will do everything you need, the RC9200 everything you might ever
desire. Between them is the RC5200.
